A new law designed by the ruling Popular Party is being voted on in the Spanish Parliament. It is called the "Law for the Protection of Citizens' Security", and violates the freedom of speech and the right to demonstrate.
The bill consists of 58 items that establishes certain acts as criminal and imposes these and other already illegal acts with excessively high fines. The offenses and penalties together form a disturbing logic, with even more disturbing consequences. Should the bill enter into force, it will be virtually impossible for Spain's citizens to publicly criticize the current government, impossible to practice many of their most basic rights and freedoms as citizens in a democracy and member state of the European Union and the United Nations.
